The European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas was spearheaded by EUROPARC (federation of Parks and protected areas of Europe) in order to promote more widespread tourism in the region and to increase integration in economic, social and environmental issues.
The objective of this Charter, which has twelve principles, is to address the issues of protected areas in proposing solutions to reconcile "tourism" and "environmental protection", in developing responsible tourism, and natural, cultural and social resources within the protected area.
The European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in the Parc du Pilat
Since 2003, Regional Natural Park of Pilat's programme of tourist development is recognized by the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas.
The Maison du Tourisme (Pilat Main Tourist Office), in direct association with the Parc, the Municipalities and all the tourist businesses in the massif, is one of the key players in the commitment to tourism which is increasingly respectful of economic, social and environmental issues in the Pilat.
The commitment comprises three parts:
- Part 1 for the Regional Natural Park of Pilat's strategy
- Part 2 for tourist businesses and their involvement in sustainable tourism
- Part 3 for tour operators and travel agencies that are developing their activity within the protected areas
